2008 Dive Reports

Jan 26-27 weekend: The Olympus and the Captain's Lady both went out this weekend.
Water temps in the 60's, vis on the Sub/Schurz/Naeco between 5 and 15 feet.

Feb 23: it has been rough rough rough for weeks!

March 9: Olympus is in the process of attempting a Live-aboard for the ECU Dive club: today wasn't do-able,
but tomorrow looks much better! Stay tuned!

April 1: it's been blowing for 3 weeks now... here's a test clip of a "just could make it" day last season

April 26 Papoose/Schurz 50/40 72-67 The sharks on the Papoose were "just like in the old days..." large sharks and dozens, all around. A small blacktip shark was milling about mid-water. Tons of baitfish hovering over the Schurz, and a good number of sharks there as well. A great first day of the year!
April 27 Sub/Aeolus 60/50 68 Somewhat better vis today, but the seas were a tad choppier. Another good day at sea! A nice stingray was seen on the Sub!

May 3 Box Wreck 60-70 72/67 This site has covered up somewhat since last year: that huge rudder off in the sand is mostly covered up. A touch of current was noticeable on the first dive, but disappeared for the second. Still somewhat chilly at depth! Do we need a safety line on the ladder?
May 4 Schurz 60-70 72/67 A sloppy swell made the ride a bit bumpy, but the absence of wind made up for it! Extremely good conditions underwater: a layer of baitfish above the wreck was positioned so that you could see the wreck underneath them. A gang of stingrays was hanging around the bow, and a few sharks are still guarding the goods. Who says the crew never gets green?

May 17 Indra 20-25 68 This was just one of those days that proves yet again... you really never know what the weather will do. We waited until 9am to depart and had a lovely day on the water. Diminishing winds throughout the morning shifted around lunchtime, providing a bit of that "flat calm" feeling, before slowly coming back again from the opposite direction. Lying on the bow felt just like being in a Corona commercial!

May 30 WR2 Lobster Rocks 70 77/74 Wow- those Charlotte boys sure can bring home some tail! DSC01450 lobster.JPG (137844 bytes)
May 31 Spar 76   The sharks cooperated nicely while filming... great conditions!

June 4 Papoose/Sub

June 6 Naeco 80+ 78/76 Excellent conditions, a few big sandtigers hanging around off the wreck.  June6 08.JPG (850924 bytes)
June 7 Naeco 80' 78/76
June 8 Cassimer/Ledge 30' 77/72 Strange, low vis on the wreck. Lots of fish, stingray and coronetfish. A few lobster on the ledge nearby.
June 9 Bedfordshire/Hardees 60+ 78/74 Great visibility- somewhat cloudy on top and it opened up nicely on the wreck. BruceMahi_6-08.JPG (38339 bytes)
June 10 Bedfordshire 60+ 78/74 Baitfish are all over, some might be sardines- a very cute fish!
June 11 Schurz 50' 78/74
June 12 Sailboat/Papoose 40'+ 78/74 Better vis on the Sailboat, but the Papoose does tend to stir itself up. The sharks are "officially" back!

June 14 Naeco 80 79/76 As usual, a great dive. Only a few big sharks are hanging around off the wreck.
June 15 Lobster Wreck/ Cassimer 100/30 80/77F Fantastic conditions on the Lobster Wreck- the entire site was visible as we descended the anchor line. Strange thing though, the Cassimir had much less visibility on the bottom. GinasTank.JPG (152105 bytes)
June 16 Naeco 80 80/76 Just as good as the day before yesterday.

June 19 Lobster Wreck/ Normannia 80/90 80/76 A calm day made for an easy ride. A bit less visibility than a few days ago, but still a great dive. A very long-spined white sea urchin was seen on the wreck.
The Normannia had a bit better vis, and is always an interesting dive.
June 20 Far East Tanker/ CaribeSea 60/30 79/76 Lots of sharks on the wreck, but not as many as last year. The deck structure is really starting to cave in- it looks different as the ocean takes its toll.

79/71 A cool layer of reduced vis has moved in on the bottom, on most of the southern wrecks. Some surge is already noticable from Bertha, way offshore.
July 12 Almost dove the Schurz     A big swell made seas quite interesting, then reports of an intense surge on the bottom made it prudent to turn around without diving. Being pushed 10' to and fro isn't wise on a wreck with lots of sharp edges!

July 14 Spar 60/15 79/77 Good news and bad news...the swell has subsided and seas were decent... but vis was diminished- making for close encounters with the sharks! The cool water layer has vanished from the bottom.
July 15 Papoose Stn
Schurz
80/35 79/74 A fantastically calm day allowed us to reach the Papoose, but the combination of low vis and current made for an unusual dive! Somewhat less current on the Schurz.

July 17 Aeolus Bow 70/30 79/76 Another bumpy day, but the bow is within reach!
July 18 Papoose 100/50 82/77 The vis is clearing up, slowly but surely. A good day to end the week! And we got a chance to visit for a moment with "Samie", a baby turtle who was just passing by... DSC04040.JPG (922775 bytes)
July 19 Aeolus Bow 80/20 83/76 That new TS made us stop at the Aeolus, along with most of the dive fleet! Conditions underwater were decent, and the Bow area is rather interesting wreckage to explore.  dsc04076.jpg (925416 bytes)

Oct 1 Schurz
Sub
40' 77 Much better vis, improving every day. Topside sea conditions are fantastic!
Oct 2 Indra 15-20' 74 Decent vis, and good dive location since the AM sea conditions were choppy. As the day progressed, the sea got calm once again. We did some fishing on the way in, and caught some really nice, BIG spanish mackerel!
Oct 3 Hardees 30-40' 76 Good vis, a couple of sand tiger sharks, and nice shells to collect. A few octopus were brought up by accident, then relocated back to the bottom.
Oct 4 Schurz 40-50 77 Great conditions above and below the water. Sharks, turtles, lionfish, triggers, a veritable plethora of activity!
Oct 5 Schurz 60-70 77 Worthy of an encore! An even better day than yesterday, and perfect for video!
